Ikat – Lovely Lively Looms
If one were to peruse the contents of this site or our Instagram posts, one is likely to notice the use of ikat. It is one of our favourite fabrics due to their vibrant colours and distinctive blurred appearance - they do add flair to any interior space whether as a cushion cover or a lampshade, among others.
The term “ikat”, derived from the Malay language (to tie, knot or bind), is used to refer to:
- the fabric itself; and
- the process of creating the said fabric.
Unlike printed fabrics where colours are dyed or printed onto the fabric itself to create patterns, ikat weavers create colours and motifs though distinct steps:
- first, the yarns (not the fabric) undergo resist dyeing (that is similar to tie-dyeing except that the thread or yarn itself that is dyed vs. the cloth in normal tie-dyeing);
- after the dyeing phase, patterns are created through an elaborate weaving process that results in a blurred appearance.
Hence, if you see blurred/fuzzy appearances in images of our ikat products, they are not signs of flaws in the design. The fuzzy appearance is actually an indication that a skilled weaver has created the ikat.
